MSF in Greece

MSF is currently active in several locations across Greece. In downtown Athens, MSF runs an Urban Day Care Center and a Clinic to respond to the medical needs of asylum seekers/migrants residing all around the city.

The Day Care Center mainly focuses on sexual and reproductive healthcare, mental healthcare and vaccinations for pregnant women. An urban outreach team provides health promotion and education sessions in camps, squats and alternative shelters throughout the city.

The Victoria Square Clinic provides primary healthcare and mental healthcare during afternoon and evening hours. MSF facilitates patient transfers to public health facilities or a private psychiatrist when needed, and provides Arabic and Farsi-speaking cultural mediators to facilitate the exchanges between patients and those healthcare personnel.

Moreover, at a third center MSF and partner organization provide medical and mental healthcare to survivors of torture and violence. In cooperation with the Babel Day Center and the Greek Council for Refugees, torture survivors are also offered legal aid, social support and integration services.

In the Elliniko camps MSF teams provide sexual and reproductive healthcare, mental healthcare, distribute hygiene kits, and conduct health promotion activities;

MSF also operates through mobile clinics in the East Attica and Central Greece.

In the camps of Malakasa, Lavrio and Ritsona MSF provides mental healthcare to migrants and asylum seekers; in the camp of Thermopyles MSF provides mental healthcare and sexual and reproductive healthcare.

MSF also operates on two islands of Northern Aegean, as well as in Northern Greece. In Thessaloniki, MSF provides mental healthcare, as well as health promotion activities through mobile units in five camps (Kalochori, Frakapor, Softex, Derveni, Kavalari) around Thessaloniki. It also provides cultural mediation support to three public hospitals in the city.  In Epirus, MSF provides psychological and psychiatric healthcare to the migrant/asylum seeking population residing in six camps, as well as to that under the UNHCR housing program coordinated by Solidarity Now.

In Lesvos, MSF runs a Clinic in the town of Mytilini for all asylum seekers and migrants residing on the island. It provides sexual and reproductive healthcare, healthcare to people suffering from chronic diseases and mental healthcare to people suffering from depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, insomnia, suicidal ideation and other symptoms. There is also a shelter program for vulnerable patients and their families identified at the Clinic, as well as health promotion and outreach at the Moria and Kara Tepe camps who refer patients to that clinic.

In Samos, MSF focuses on mental healthcare and health promotion outreach. In cooperation with the Greek Council for Refugees, MSF also provides legal information and assistance on asylum claims. Additionally, MSF operates a temporary shelter for vulnerable people in the town of Vathy hosting mostly women, children and patients requiring urgent medical treatment in the mainland. MSF facilitates migrants and asylum seekers with their referral appointments at the local hospital, including a translator to facilitate exchanges between patient and health care provider.
